Williamson County Property Tax Exemptions 2026: Every Break You Qualify For
Most Williamson County homeowners leave money on the table every year by missing exemptions they qualify for. Here's the complete list for 2026 — and how to apply.
Homestead Exemption (Most Important)
If you own and live in your home as your primary residence, you qualify for the general homestead exemption. As of 2023 legislation, Texas increased this to $100,000 off your appraised value for school district taxes.
What it means in dollars: On a $450,000 home, you're taxed on $350,000 instead. At a 2.25% rate, that's $2,250/year in savings.
How to apply:
- File with the Williamson Central Appraisal District (WCAD) at wcad.org
- Submit between January 1 and April 30 of the tax year
- Only needs to be filed once — it carries forward automatically
- Must own and occupy the home as of January 1 of the filing year
Over-65 Exemption
Homeowners 65 or older get an additional $10,000 exemption on school district taxes on top of the homestead exemption. More importantly, the over-65 exemption freezes your school district tax bill — it cannot increase as long as you own and live in the home.
This is a massive benefit for retirees on fixed incomes. Even if your home value rises 20%, your school tax stays flat.
Surviving spouses of over-65 homeowners (who are at least 55) can continue the freeze after the owner passes.
Disability Exemption
If you have a disability as defined by the Social Security Administration, you qualify for the same $10,000 additional exemption and tax ceiling that over-65 homeowners receive. You cannot claim both the over-65 and disability exemptions simultaneously — choose whichever benefits you more.
100% Disabled Veteran Exemption
Texas offers a complete property tax exemption (100% of appraised value) for veterans rated 100% disabled by the VA. This applies to all taxing units — city, county, school district, and special districts.
Surviving spouses of 100% disabled veterans may also qualify to continue this exemption.
Partial disability ratings also get partial exemptions:
- 10–29%: $5,000 exemption
- 30–49%: $7,500 exemption
- 50–69%: $10,000 exemption
- 70–99%: $12,000 exemption
Agricultural Exemption (1-d-1 Open Space)
If your property qualifies as agricultural land (actively used for farming, ranching, or timber), you can apply for ag valuation — taxed on productivity value rather than market value. This can reduce your taxable value by 80–90% on rural land.
This applies to some larger acreage properties on the outskirts of Leander and Liberty Hill.
