What Drywall Repair Actually Costs in Central Texas (Real 2026 Numbers)

Published on 9/11/2026

Search "drywall repair cost" and you get a per-square-foot number. That number is close to useless for repairs, and here is why.

A doorknob hole is about 12 square inches. At the $2 to $4 per square foot that estimator sites quote, that patch should cost about fifty cents. Nobody will do it for fifty cents, and anyone who quotes you that way has not thought about what the job involves.

Per-square-foot pricing works for hanging drywall on a new build, where a crew covers thousands of feet in a day. Repair is a different business. You are paying for trips, matching and drying time, not for material.

Here is what it actually costs in Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown and greater Austin.

The short answer

| Repair | Typical installed price | |---|---| | Minimum service call | $200 – $350 | | Small hole (doorknob, fist-sized) | $200 – $400 | | Medium hole (up to about 12 in.) | $300 – $550 | | Large hole / partial sheet replacement | $450 – $900 | | Single crack, cut, taped and textured | $250 – $450 | | Ceiling seam, long run | $450 – $900 | | Nail pops, whole room | $200 – $400 | | Water-damaged ceiling section | $600 – $1,500 | | Full sheet replacement, per sheet | $250 – $500 | | Popcorn removal and smooth finish, per room | $700 – $1,800 | | Whole-house repaint-ready patching | $1,500 – $5,000 |

These are ranges for planning. Anyone who gives you a firm number without seeing the wall — or at least a photo — is guessing.

Why there is a minimum

This is the part that surprises people, so it is worth being blunt about it.

A single small patch is maybe forty minutes of actual work. The job around it is not forty minutes:

  • Trip one: look at it, cut it out, back the hole, set the patch, first coat of mud.
  • Overnight: compound has to dry. You cannot rush it with a heat gun without cracking it.
  • Trip two: second coat, feathered wider.
  • Overnight again.
  • Trip three: third coat, sand, match texture, prime.
  • Trip four (or later the same day): paint.

That is two to four visits across three or four days, plus drive time across the metro, plus the texture test board, plus the paint. A $250 minimum on a job like that is not padding — it is roughly break-even.

What this means for you: batch your repairs. Five patches in one visit costs far less than five separate visits. If you have a doorknob hole now and you know the hallway needs paint in spring, one trip does both. Walk the house, make a list, then call.

What actually drives the price

Texture is most of the skill

A flat wall in a modern build is the cheap case. Texture is where cost enters.

  • Smooth / Level 5 — hardest to hide a patch on, because there is no pattern to disguise the transition. Ironically the most expensive finish to repair well.
  • Orange peel — the default in most Central Texas production homes. Sprayed. Matching the droplet size and density is a real skill.
  • Knockdown — sprayed heavier, then flattened with a blade at the right moment. Timing is everything; too early and it smears, too late and it stays lumpy.
  • Popcorn / acoustic ceilings — common pre-2000. Often impossible to match convincingly; the honest answer is usually to scrape and refinish the whole ceiling.
  • Hand textures (skip trowel, Santa Fe, slap brush) — matching someone else's hand pattern from fifteen years ago is genuinely difficult and priced accordingly.

More on this in why your patch still shows.

Ceilings cost more than walls

Everything is harder overhead. Mud wants to fall, you are working off a ladder or bench, and gravity means thinner coats and more of them. Budget roughly 30 to 50 percent more than the same repair on a wall.

Height and access

A two-storey entry or a vaulted living room needs scaffolding or a lift. That can add several hundred dollars before anyone touches the wall.

What is behind the hole

A clean hole through empty stud bay is simple. A hole with a water line, a gas line, an electrical run or a duct immediately behind it changes the job. So does discovering the cavity is wet — at that point it is a water job, not a drywall job. See water-damaged drywall.

Paint

A patch is not finished until it is invisible, and that means painting wall to wall, corner to corner — not just the patch. New joint compound absorbs differently from aged paint, so a spot-painted repair flashes: you see a dull or shiny rectangle in raking light even when the texture is perfect.

If you have the original paint and the wall is under about five years old, a spot repair sometimes blends. Usually it does not. Assume the wall gets recoated.

Lead and asbestos in older homes

Central Austin housing stock from before 1978 can carry lead paint; textured ceilings and joint compound from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos. Testing is cheap. Disturbing either without knowing is not. This mostly affects central Austin rather than the newer Williamson County suburbs, but it is worth a question if your house is older.

What you can reasonably do yourself

Honest assessment, including the parts that argue against hiring us:

Worth doing yourself:

  • Filling small nail holes before painting. Genuinely easy.
  • A hairline crack in a flat-painted wall you are already going to repaint.
  • A small hole in a garage, closet or utility room where appearance does not matter.

Not worth doing yourself:

  • Anything on a textured wall you care about. Texture matching is the whole job, and it is not a first-attempt skill.
  • Anything on a ceiling. Gravity, angles, and every flaw lit from the side by daylight.
  • Anything in a formal room with big windows. Raking light is merciless on a poor feather.
  • Anything wet. Find the leak first.

The most common repair we get called to do is the second attempt — a self-repair that is now a larger, harder problem than the original hole. If you do try it, keep the patch small and feather wider than feels necessary.

Getting an estimate that means something

Text a photo. Genuinely — it saves everyone a trip, and most contractors in this market will give you a range from a decent picture.

Useful photos:

  • The whole wall, so the texture and lighting are visible
  • A close-up with a coin or tape measure for scale
  • The ceiling if it is involved
  • Anything wet, stained or discoloured

Useful information:

  • Roughly when the house was built
  • Whether you have the original paint
  • Whether this has been repaired before
  • Whether anything else in the house needs doing on the same trip

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix a hole in the wall? For a doorknob-sized hole in Central Texas, $200 to $400 installed, texture matched and painted — with most of that being the service minimum rather than the patch itself. The hole is not what you are paying for; the four trips and the texture match are.

Is drywall repair charged by the hour or by the job? Almost always by the job, because drying time means hourly billing would punish you for physics. Some contractors bill hourly for large open-ended jobs like whole-house patching before a repaint.

Why do I need to paint the whole wall for one small patch? New joint compound absorbs paint differently from paint that has been on the wall for years. Paint only the patch and the repair becomes visible as a difference in sheen, even when the texture matches perfectly. Corner to corner is what makes it disappear.

How long does drywall repair take? Two to four days for most repairs, and the time is drying, not labour. Each coat of compound needs to dry fully — usually overnight — before the next goes on. Anyone promising a same-day textured, painted, invisible repair is cutting one of those coats.

Is it cheaper to replace a whole sheet than patch a big hole? Often, yes. Past roughly 12 to 16 inches, cutting back to the studs and setting a fresh piece is usually faster and gives a better result than building up a large patch. Your contractor should tell you which way is cheaper for your specific hole.

Do I need a permit for drywall repair in Leander or Cedar Park? Not for cosmetic patching. If you are moving walls, altering structure, or the repair involves electrical or plumbing work, that changes — check with the city building department before starting.

The summary

Drywall repair is not priced by area. It is priced by trips, drying time and how hard the texture is to match — which is why a fifty-cent patch costs $250 and why five patches at once cost far less than five patches one at a time.
