Stump Grinding Cost in Leander & Cedar Park (And When It's Worth It)

Published on 10/3/2026

The tree is gone, but the stump is still there, catching the mower, sprouting suckers, or sitting right where you wanted a flower bed. Here's what it costs to get rid of it and which option makes sense.

Ballpark prices

Rough planning ranges, not quotes:

| Stump | Typical range | |---|---| | Small (under about 12 in. across) | $100 – $200 | | Medium (12–24 in.) | $175 – $350 | | Large (24 in.+), live oak, or cluster | $300 – $600+ | | Each additional stump, same visit | Often discounted |

Most tree services charge a minimum per visit, so grinding three stumps at once costs much less per stump than one at a time.

Grinding vs. full stump removal

Stump grinding uses a machine to chew the stump down to several inches below the soil. The roots stay in the ground and break down over time. It's faster, cheaper and leaves a much smaller mess. This is what most people want.

Full stump removal means digging out the stump and the main root ball. It leaves a big hole, takes heavy equipment and costs considerably more. You'd only do it if you're building, pouring a slab or putting in a pool right where the stump is.

What drives the price

  • Diameter. The wider the stump, the longer the grind.
  • Species. Live oak and mesquite are hard and slow. Hackberry and ash grind quickly.
  • Surface roots. Oaks and cedar elms often have big roots running across the yard. Grinding those adds time.
  • Access. A grinder needs a path in. Narrow side gates (common in newer Leander subdivisions) may require a smaller machine.
  • Rock. Much of western Williamson County sits on shallow limestone. Rock right around the stump slows grinding and wears out teeth, and it can limit how deep the grinder can go.

What happens after grinding

You're left with a pile of wood chips and soil roughly where the stump was. You can:

  • Use the grindings as mulch around other plants.
  • Have them hauled away and fill the hole with topsoil to plant grass or a bed.

Expect the spot to settle a bit over the next few months as buried wood breaks down. Top it up with soil if needed.

Can I just leave the stump?

Sometimes, yes. Leaving a stump is fine if it's:

  • in a natural area or back corner,
  • cut low enough not to be a trip or mower hazard,
  • not sprouting new shoots.

Reasons to grind it anyway:

  • Suckers. Some species (cedar elm, hackberry, chinaberry, privet) send up new sprouts from the stump and roots.
  • Termites and pests. A rotting stump next to the house can attract wood-loving insects.
  • Mowing and looks. A stump in the middle of the lawn is a constant obstacle.
  • Planning. If you want to replant in the same area, grinding is the way to clear it.

Before grinding: call 811

Texas law requires calling 811 before digging so utilities can mark buried lines, and grinding goes below grade. A tree service should handle this, but it's worth asking.

Frequently asked questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Cedar Park? Most residential stumps fall between about $100 and $400, depending on diameter, species, roots and access. Multiple stumps in one visit lower the cost per stump.

How deep does stump grinding go? Typically several inches below the soil, enough to plant grass over it. Shallow limestone common around Leander and Cedar Park can limit depth in some spots.

Will the roots keep growing after the stump is ground? For most species, no. The roots decay over time. A few species that sucker heavily may send up sprouts for a season, which can be cut back.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot? It's better to plant a few feet away. The buried wood takes years to break down and can tie up nitrogen in the soil.
